Reconstruction Paired Text Guide
LIBS 644: Literature and Media for Young Adults
A dual-disciplinary teacher's guide to facilitating a high school educational unit utilizing the paired text theory: taking two different books, one fiction, the other nonfiction, yet orbiting the same topic, to create course content fostering connections and comprehension between the two. A variety of activities were designed to align with Virginia Department of Education Standards, with a focus on information literacy, historical continuity, and creating visuals that convey the two. Though some content will probably prove too complex for ninth graders, the parallels between the Reconstruction era and the political conditions of today would hopefully be compelling enough to compensate.
